Years ago, I said one of my dream concerts would be Brett Dennen and The Avett Brothers. Guess what? It FINALLY happened last month in one of my favorite cities – Madison, WI. The concert was held at Breese Stevens Field. I guess this is one of the first major concerts they have held there. The parking situation was great. We were able to park for free in the lot behind the Constellation apartment building. From there it was just a short walk to Salvortore’s Tomato Pies for some delicious vegan pizza (that will be a future post) before the show. We had gold circle tickets so we were able to get in the general admission area closest to the stage. The “gold circle” area was larger than I thought it would be but in this case, worth the extra cost. I wanted to share some pictures from the concert. Let’s get to them!
There was actually another opening act before Brett Dennen. Her name is Nicole Atkins. She was more country/folk along the lines of the Avett Brothers:
We were excited to see Brett Dennen again. This was our sixth time seeing him in concert. We saw him last year at his acoustic show in Madison and it wasn’t one of my favorite concert experiences (the crowd was rowdy/drunk and he was a bit nervous). I was looking for a chance to have a good Brett Dennen concert experience again. This was the Brett Dennen concert experience we know and love. Although I wish he could have played longer. The woman next to us told me she loved how happy I was during his set. His music is fun, heartfelt, and catchy. I’m not used to being so far from the stage during his shows so that was the only downside.
This was our third time seeing the Avett Brothers in concert and each time the crowd has been bigger and bigger. Here is the crowd anxiously awaiting the Avett Brothers:
Who knew Scott could play the banjo and a kazoo at the same time?
Do you know how I remember which brother is Scott and which one is Seth? Seth is the one that has a signature model Martin guitar. Not that I’m jealous or anything (ok, I am totally jealous!)
“I love you Joe Kwon!!!”- That has been a inside joke Rob and I have had since we saw them in concert in 2011. At that show, a very nice, but albeit drunk woman kept yelling that throughout the concert. Even when the Avetts are performing on a t.v. show, we eagerly wait to spot Joe Kwon so we can beat the other to saying “I love you Joe Kwon”.
Here are some more pics from the show. The Avett Brothers always put on a good show. They played a good mix of songs including “Die Die Die” which is one of my favorites. Rob once said, why don’t you bring a sign that says the name of the song you want to hear? I told him, well, security may take offense with me trying to bring in a sign that says “Die Die Die.”
Here’s a partial video clip of Will You Return I took:
I would definitely go back and see a show here again, preferably in the warmer weather. Overall, it was a great time and we really enjoyed ourselves. Though probably not as much as those people who brought a full bottle of wine.
