Garden Produce and Zucchini Bread

Hi all. Thank you so much for your kind words in regards to my previous post. I was really relieved to hear that Selina from Vegans Rock didn’t become ill from the hummus. I am feeling much better now. I was sick that first week in July. We went to Taste on a Saturday and I became sick that Monday. We didn’t do anything for the the 4th because I wasn’t feeling good. At least I know what made me ill.

I also have some disheartening news to report about my community garden plot – produce theft! My garden plot neighbor lives near the community garden and took a walk just as it was getting dark. He walked by the garden and noticed someone on his plot. He went over to investigate and discovered a woman on his plot and a guy on our plot. He asked them what they were doing and they tried to say that our plot belonged to them. My garden neighbor said that was impossible because both plots were his and they ran! He called the police and gave him a description of the couple and the car they were in. When they ran, they dropped one of the bags of stolen produce.

I really appreciate that my garden neighbor went to investigate. Although those bastards took quite a bit of my (green) tomatoes, he caught them before they had a chance to take my special heirloom tomatoes I’m growing. My poor garden neighbor though, they took all of his eggplants and a lot of his cucumbers and other veggies. The woman who has the plot behind us had all of her cherry tomato plants stripped. We’re not sure how many plots were affected. The police said they will be driving past the park more at night.

I finally uploaded some of my garden bounty pics. I’ve picked much more than what I’ve photographed. The yellow ball squash are coming in like crazy. Yay! I was especially pleased because I grew the plants from seed. I’m lucky I got a picture of the pickling cukes. They are my favorites and normally don’t last long enough to be photographed. LOL

And I used half of this zucchini to make a zucchini bread:

This recipe for Zucchini Bread makes two loaves so I just cut the recipe in half. I added just a little bit more flour so the bread was sturdier/denser. The bread was fantastic.

I’ll be visiting and commenting on blogs this weekend. Hope you have a wonderful day!!! 😀

Thank goodness your garden came along when he did. I’m so sorry that happened, but I bet they won’t be back.

The yellow ball squash I got from my farmers market awhile back was about the best thing I’ve eaten all summer. You’re so lucky to have such a great harvest.

I’m really sorry to hear about the thieves…I could understand if it was bunnies or other critters..yeesh!

I’m glad you included the zucchini bread recipe. We pulled a humungous zucchini from our garden and I need to use it up. I’ve never made zucchini bread before, so this should be good.

    Have a great weekend Emmy!

I’m so sorry about the thieves- that is so heartbreaking. I hope, at the very least, that they were people who at least needed the food… Daiku and I suffered similarly- last weekend, all our tomatoes disappeared. We think it was deer. =(

Crime does not pay. Bad karma for them! i’m sad that happened, Emmy, how totally aunfair. i’m w/Bazu in that i hope that they at least they must have needed it to go that far… UGH!

On the brighter side, i love what you got! Great stuff, Emmy. And if i lived back in Skokie, i’d be knockin’ on your door for some of that bread…

    Glad you are feeling better!!

Your garden plot seems to be really coming along. I am sorry to hear about the garden thieves and I hope that you don’t have any more unfortunate thefts. Your zucchini bread looks delicious. It’s just about dinner time and I haven’t started anything cooking. I have to say, your loaf looks like the perfect meal (slathered with a bit of EB of course).

Sorry to hear about the drama at the garden. Your veggies sure look good, though 🙂

Thats terrible!! Your bread recipe looks similar to mine. What do you replace the eggs with?

I’m sorry people were stealing your veggies. Thats crazy!

Garden plots like that would never work in Africa as they would be raided daily. Here you need to have your veggies close to the house and a couple of barking dogs. Sadly too many people are hungry.

Your veggies and the zucchini bread look really great.

Wow! I’m totally envious! Can you believe my zucchini didn’t come up this year. I’m missing out on the zucchini flowers that I enjoyed last year. I also love zucchini bread and baking lots of fun things with zucchini.
