Long Post Ahead – Union Station, Food on our Trip

We took the Metra into Chicago’s Union Station on Friday
and from there left on an Detroit-bound Amtrak train (ok, it was actually Dearborn-bound, but close enough). While at Union Station, we walked over to The Great Hall which we didn’t get to see the last time we were there. It was beautiful and I loved all the architectural details. Of course I took a few pictures:

I thought these lamp posts were lovely yet kind of gaudy at the same time:

We went to Michigan to celebrate Easter and my dad’s birthday (which was last month) and to pick up my car. I didn’t snap a picture of our Easter meal since I’ve blogged about the exact same meal a few times before. My dad and Rob picked up take-out from Country Restaurant in Dearborn….fattoush, freshly baked pita, hummos, and vegetarian stuffed grape leaves. YUM! They also stopped to pick up one of the only things I miss about Detroit……..

I brought the dessert for Easter dinner with me….Martha’s Individual Strawberry Jam Cakes. I made the icing at my parents’ house (Mom – thanks for getting the icing ingredients for me). I lugged a large wheeled duffle bag with me on the train filled with tins of baked goods, including the jam cakes. I’m pleased to say the baked goods made the trip successfully and my family was thrilled with the treats.

Here’s my dad blowing out his birthday candles….that’s my mom’s arm on the left side of the picture….I’d never wear anything pink! LOL

Happy Birthday Dad

On our way home, my car was packed! We brought home a few kitchen items I needed, some books, Rob’s summer tires and rims, and our bikes. I’m really glad to have my car again. We left my car behind temporarily so some items could be fixed by the dealerships we’re familiar with before the car warranty ran out. Getting back to our trip home….we stopped at our favorite place for vegan food between Detroit and Chicago…The People’s Food Co-op in Kalamazoo, MI. It’s not inexpensive but the food is tasty and vegan.

Rob had a Tofurky Sandwich:

I had the Raw Hempseed Tabouli. It was fantastic! I want to try making this at home:

I didn’t like the Black Bean Hummos but Rob loved it:

Can’t forget dessert…Almond Butter Bars….YUM! The chocolate topping has a tendency to melt quickly….keep them in a cooler until you’re ready to eat them:

Of course I have to mention the crazy weather. It snowed on Saturday. The weather was nicer during our Christmas trip! Unbelievable. Luckily, the weather cleared up for our drive on Sunday.

Look at how dreary the weather was on Saturday in Michigan…this picture was taken in the middle of the afternoon:

Well the weather isn’t much better in Chicago…there’s snow on the ground today! In fact, it’s been snowing all morning. Here’s a picture from my window:

Whew! You made it the end of this very long post. Congratulations 😀 I hope you have a wonderful day and that the weather is much nicer in your neck of the woods. 🙂

Brrrrrrrr! I love the snow as long as it’s in the photos and not in my environment… Glad you got to travel to celebrate Easter AND your dad’s (such a cute dad you have, btw) b’day! Very nice!

I am a sucker for old train stations. I probably was at Union Station at some point in my youth but i can’t really remember… so probably i’d say i’ve not been to any in the Midwest, which i’ll have to rectify in the future. But oh, how i love seein’ them thru photos – thanks for showing this. I’ve been to the one in Los Angeles, the site of myriad Hollywood scenes, and have many times been to our cool one in San Diego. Thanks for showing the neat architecture, Emmy.

    I love this post!

Happy birthday to your dad! That is a great photo of him blowing out the candles. And I love the views of Union Station- it totally looks like Grand Central Station in NYC. Same time period, I guess. You must be so relieved to have your car. When I came to Syracuse from CA, I didn’t have my car for 6 months. Luckily, we found a great guy to drive it for us to St. Louis, so we only had to drive it half-way cross country, not all the way!

I don’t think the temperatures here are going to rise above 40 any time soon. I totally feel your snow pain.

You guys had weather like us! Poor you. Looks like you feasted well!

The snow looks like what we had yesterday. You bought a tofurkey sandwich, wow! Raw Hempseed Tabouli….. when you do try to make it I’d love to see your results. Cabbage rolls seem like the perfect April meal. I made some last year and blogged about them, I haven;t been home enough to cook anything special this spring season.

Oh…. I think that you posted pictures of the Illinois capitol. If I remember right it looks alot like the Iowa capitol building and was built by the same architect.

The weather is crazy. I went to Ann Arbor on Wednesday, and it snowed, then rained the entire day. It never stopped!!
