Thrifty Finds – Vintage Chair

Rob spotted this great vintage chair under a huge pile of clothes and afghans at an estate sale. We moved all the stuff off the chair and saw that the price was $10. Of course I balked at the price and before we knew it, one of the workers at the sale ran up and said “How about $5 for the chair? You can’t beat that price.” And I said “For $5, you’re right, I can’t refuse.” Yay for the $5 chair. I’m probably going to recover the chair but haven’t decided if I’ll do it this year or wait until after we’ve bought a house.

Chair before cleaning:

Vintage Chair - Before Cleaning

Chair after cleaning. To clean the vinyl, I used a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, rinsed well with water and then dried with a soft cloth. It might be hard to tell the difference in the pictures, I’m not sure? It looks great in person though. πŸ˜€

Vintage Chair - After Cleaning

We’re waiting until the nicer weather arrives to start exploring some of the wonderful homes/architecture in Chicagoland. However, there was one house I definitely wanted to see…..the house used in Home Alone and Home Alone 2. Home Alone 2 is one of my favorite movies!!! I was really excited to see the house and the area itself. Winnetka, IL is a gorgeous area filled with homes I cannot afford. πŸ˜€

Have a great day everyone! πŸ™‚

That chair is great! It does look slightly cleaner in the second photo, but I am sure it is more noticeable in person.
The house looks amazing! Do you know lives there? It looks kind of massive for one family!

I recognize that house! What a great buy on the chair. I know you’ll have fun recovering it.

Great chair! Do you have any other retro type pieces of furniture? (other than the funky bookcase?)

That’s quite the house. I’ve never seen Home Alone 2, only the first installment…;o)

I love love LOVE that chair! I can’t believe you only paid $5 for it. I think estate sales are something I need to start going to…if only I had my car!

I really love that chair! I would have bought it too, even though we have far too many chairs in this apartment, and not enough bums to fill them!

That is so cool that you got to see the Home Alone house. Home Alone 1 & 2 are two of my favourite movies ever! John Hughes directed that and many other fabulous movies, most of which take place in Chicago. Maybe you can see other movie houses too!

Sweet find! That chair would fit in perfectly at my house too- you guys scored!

Oh, and you said it- I can’t wait for warmer weather. You are so right- that is when it’s fun to drive and explore and learn more about your area. Hopefully it will come soon (as I speak, Syracuse is experiencing the coldest day of the year…)

Cool house – I can’t afford it either! $5 for a chair is such a great bargain. It looks to be in perfect shape too.

Scottish Vegan, unfortunately, I have no idea who lives there but I agree, it’s quite an impressive house (and large for one family!).

Aurora’s Mom, oh my goodness, you’ll have to watch Home Alone 2 sometime. It’s even better than the first. As for furniture, I’ve got a mix of vintage and new furniture…and some of the newer furniture has a retro or modern style to it. My favorite vintage piece is probably my 1950’s Danish Modern Credenza. Then I have some retro things that aren’t quite furniture…like an olive green cart with sparkly wheels. πŸ˜€

Kati, what a deal, huh? I was even more excited that I didn’t even have to haggle to get a better price! We bought the chair at the first sale we went to. Then we drove around with it the rest of the morning and afternoon while we went to more sales and Evanston. LOL

Judy, it was so neat to see the house in person. There are several web sites I found dedicated to movie locations in Chicago. I hope to check out other movie locations when we’re around town. πŸ˜€
