Winter Squash and Estate Sale Finds

The farm stand I go to was having a winter squash stock-up sale: 10 squash for $8 (mix and match). I bought 2 acorn, 2 white acorn, 2 spaghetti, 2 sweet dumpling, 1 butternut, and 1 buttercup.

I also went to an estate sale today. Apparently, there was a lot of merchandise left over from a sale over the weekend and everything was 75% off today. I bought two cookbooks for only 50¢. Actually, I found a dime on the floor making my final total 40¢. Yipppeeee! The first cookbook pictured is called “Natural Foods Cookbook” from 1982. There are several recipes in this cookbook that use tofu. The second cookbook pictured is the “Culinary Arts Institute Crockery Cooking” cookbook. It’s from 1976 and has quite a few vegetables recipes in it.

I haven’t been making much new food lately. Last week was really busy and I know this week is going to be the same. I did get my hands on some tamarind and used that in VwaV’s Pad Thai recipe instead of lime juice. It was delicious!!!! I’m going to be trying another recipe from “Baking: From My Home to Yours” tomorrow. Look for the results on Wednesday.

Emmy, you made me laugh so much with your story about finding the dime on the floor! You and I think very much along the same lines! lol. Your deal definitely beats my $5 deal!
Those squashes look so neat. I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never had a white acorn, a buttercup, or a sweet dumpling squash. The names alone sound so delicious-I can’t wait to see what you do with them.
Oh, and your previous post made me crave spinach pies so much. Beautiful.
Good luck with your stressful week- I’m right there with ya.

Cool finds! Love all that squash — I’m with Bazu, I’ve basically only had zucchini and yellow squash. It’ll be interesting to see what you do with them.

those spinach pies are going to force me to shut down the computer — too hungry now, can’t type — they look so perfectly delicious. and one of these days, i’m going to make that plum cake — i emailed the recipe to myself. (I made your lime cookies recently – still need to post)
hope the week breezes by for you. can’t wait to see what you cook up with the pretty squash — great deal… as always! 😮

Great finds yet again. I love winter squashes, so I’ll be watching to see what you cook up.

The spinach pies look delectable. Spinach is still hard to find here. When I was at a restaurant on Sunday, I ordered tofu scramble with portabellas, sun dried tomatoes and spinach. They had no spinach and subbed broccoli.

What good buys on the squash! And new cookbooks are always fun. I can’t remember where, but I saw a recipe online today for spaghetti squash cake. I know you’re a great baker – what do you think?

Atxvegan, I’ve never heard of a cake using spaghetti squash. I’m intrigued. Let me know if you find the recipe 🙂
